The French Revolution was a major turning point in all of European history. The old regime was destroyed and a new order came to be. We will talk about the causes of the revolution, when it ended, and if it was violent, Napoleon, what happened after his defeat, and some other leaders, and movies I have seen about the Revolution and how they were correct, plus other things I want to learn. The immediate cause of the French Revolution in 1789 was the near collapse of the French budget. On the day before the revolution, the French king continued to spend large amounts of money on wars and court luxuries. Another cause of the revolution was the three estates. Once Napoleon seized power, the Revolution was able to come to an end in 1799. The above facts state the cause of the Revolution, when it ended, and how it was violent. There was a good amount of leaders in this chapter during the French Revolution, and after the French Revolution. Georges Danton, the first leader mentioned, put constant pressure on the National Convention to adopt more radical measures, and many people agreed with his thoughts. Robespierre, another leader, dominated the Committee of Public Safety, then was able to come up with the policies that became known as the Reign of Terror. The Reign of Terror meant that as a temporary measure, courts were able to prosecute traitors. Prince Klemens von Matternich, a third leader, was a man who believed in the political philosophy known as conservatism. The conservatives favored the obedience to political authority. All of the men listed above were important in shaping the French Revolution, but the most important figure during and after the Revolution was Napoleon Bonaparte. Napoleon was an important figure in French history because he had military successe s, such as being a brigadier general, set up a new government called the consulate, made peace with the Church, and lastly, started a new bureaucracy of capable officials.
